what do I need to power a dvdrom (computer DVD drive) from a wall socket?
I have a dvdrom that I want to power from a wall socket. What type of adapter should I use to connect the molex plug to? Will any 12v DC adapter work?
The power supply must be one supplying regulated 12 volts under the specific load you require. It should only vary by less than 0.2 v according to the requirements of the specifications of your machine. The most common products are classified as 'switching' power converters. Many power supplies meet this criteria from Electrosonic, Ozitronics, Dontronics, Cana Pacific, Hewlett Packard, Hammond, etc. depending where in the world you live. There are also kit manufacturers that supply assembled and tested modules and my be a source to consider.
I you purchase a raw socket, assuming you can solder or have a technician do it for you, you can adapt the raw terminals to the device. I would also recommend a fuse and switch in-line on the output voltage. I use a 'smart' switch for items like these to be controlled by the host system connected to the device.
