Most important songs...that makes the question interesting to me. I'd like to answer this chronologically as well, charting my musical appreciation from early childhood back to the beginning of college.
1. "La Bamba" by Ritchie Valens - This was the first song that I ever really loved as a very young child. I don't know why it appealed to me so then, but I guess now I think it was my first look into another culture. I would go on to study history, and to fall deeply in love with looking at other cultures and ways of life. Maybe this was my first step.
2. "Your Song" by Elton John - One of the first songs I liked separate of my parents as a kid. Sappy love songs always did get to me.
3. "Nessun Dorma" by Luciano Pavarotti - The first time I ever really responded so much to non-rock music. Hearing this song made me get the opera Turandot from the library, and it really opened me up to so much more.
4. "Love Song" by The Cure - My favourite song to this day. Something about it just struck me deep inside.
5. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana - Okay, its a cliche to put this on here I know. Its been a while since I've even really liked this song. But I remember so clearly the first time I heard it. It was something so different to me, and it seemed like it was the first time that modern music had really gripped me and felt like something of my own. I became hooked on what would be known as alternative music right then and there.
6. "Drown" by The Smashing Pumpkins - My first Pumpkins song. They would become my favourite band in the years to come.
7. "Break on Through to the Other Side" by The Doors - I had heard my mother play classic rock plenty, but I ignored it because it was my Mom's music. But when I watched Forrest Gump the songs in there really got me, and I bought the soundtrack. I would put this song on repeat and listen over and over until I finally got some of their albums and realised this was just the tip of the iceberg. Suddenly, there was something good about my mother's music.
8. "Concierto d'Aranjuez" by Miles Davis - My Dad played many different types of music, but I'd never heard anything like Miles. Sketches of Spain would probably become the album I would borrow from him the most, so much so that he finally bought me my own copy so I would stop taking his. It opened me up to so much other music and expanded what had begun with that opera record.
9. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" or "Norwegian Wood" by The Beatles - I've decided that the transition from liking poppy early Beatles songs to liking some of the later stuff is an important transition to adulthood and adult listening patterns. At least for myself and quite a few of my friends. I started borrowing Rubber Soul, Revolver, and the White Album from my Dad instead of the first few albums towards the end of high school.
10. "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" by Bob Dylan - I guess this was when I finally embraced my mother's music. Dylan was her favourite, and I felt as a kid that I should like everything my Dad did but despise all that was my Mom's. I never understood it when I was young, I thought his voice was terrible. As I got to college I finally started to warm up to my mother, and I also let myself listen to Dylan for the very first time without my blinders on. Maybe I was wrong about him, and about her.
Sorry for writing the dissertation there. These aren't my ten favourite songs...but I guess the ones that most relate to a time in my life and shaped not just what I listen to now but have some slight role in who I am as well.
